Panels do not usually fail dramatically. They get quietly overwhelmed, and the house adapts around them until something forces the issue — usually an EV, a heat pump, an insurance inspection or a home sale.
Fuses work, but they invite the worst habit in residential electrical: putting a 30 amp fuse in a 15 amp slot because it keeps blowing. That removes all protection from the circuit while leaving it feeling fixed.
Both have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip under fault. A panel whose breakers may not trip is not doing the one thing a panel exists to do. Insurance carriers increasingly ask about these.
Heat means resistance, and resistance in a panel means a loose lug or a degraded bus. This is not a watch-and-wait item.
Full panels get worked around with tandem breakers and double-tapped lugs. Sometimes that is legitimate, often it is not, and either way it means the service was sized for a different era of the house.
A brief flicker is normal. A visible sag across the whole house every cycle points to undersized service or a compromised neutral.
An EV charger, a heat pump, an induction range, a hot tub, a shop sub panel — any one of these can push a 100 amp service past its limit. Better to size the panel once than to upgrade twice.
Moisture and electricity in the same box is a straightforward replacement decision.
A straight breaker box replacement runs roughly $1,300 to $2,200. A 100 to 200 amp service upgrade typically lands between $1,900 and $3,400, with meter base condition and service mast height driving the spread. Power is off for four to eight hours on a normal swap, and the job needs a permit and an inspection.
