Electrical guide
Electrical pricing is often kept deliberately vague, which serves the contractor and nobody else. Here are real ranges for Alabama, and an explanation of what moves a job from the bottom of a range to the top.
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic / service call | $89 – $149 |
| Outlet or switch replacement | $135 – $290 |
| Add a new outlet | $180 – $420 |
| Circuit breaker replacement | $150 – $310 |
| Ceiling fan installation | $150 – $520 |
| Recessed light, per can | $140 – $260 |
| Dedicated circuit | $300 – $700 |
| EV charger installation | $650 – $1,300 |
| Breaker box replacement | $1,300 – $2,200 |
| 100 to 200 amp service upgrade | $1,900 – $3,400 |
| Whole house rewire (1,500–2,000 sq ft) | $8,000 – $18,000 |
Access. An open crawlspace and a walkable attic can halve the labour on a wiring job compared with a slab-on-grade two-storey with plaster walls.
Distance from the panel. Wire is priced per foot and pulling it is priced in hours.
What is already there. Aluminum wiring, an obsolete panel or non-compliant earlier work all add scope, and none of it is visible from the driveway.
Permits and inspection. Required for panel, service and rewire work, and worth having. Unpermitted electrical work causes real problems at sale and at claim time.
Hourly billing transfers all the uncertainty to you, and rewards slow work. We quote flat: one number for the job, agreed before anyone starts. If it takes longer than expected, that is our problem. If we find something genuinely different once a wall is open, we stop and requote rather than adding it silently.
Beware quotes given over the phone for anything structural, quotes that jump when you mention insurance, and any estimate that will not put the scope in writing. Ask what happens if the job runs over, and ask specifically whether permit and inspection are included.
